The Next Big Thing in Event Tech: Cold Sparklers
Event lighting is always on the cutting edge of technology, serving as a harbinger of “what’s to come.” In recent years, we’ve seen the rise of video mapping as a way to build dynamism into an event and it has been a popular choice on the market since, despite the fact that it’s a bit cost-prohibitive.
Well, let me share the latest tech that has sparked (get it?) a lot of chatter in the industry: cold sparklers. Also known as cold spark fountains, these are a safe alternative to the traditional fire-based sparklers.
You know the deal: A couple says “I do,” parties ‘til the sun goes down, and embarks on their grand exit amidst a sea of sparkles. Their guests are lined up to bid them adieu, each holding a handheld sparkler that lasts a few minutes if you’re lucky. Cold sparklers, on the other hand, look like a simple box on the ground until they unleash a fountain of sparklers upon the happy couple!
What’s so great about cold sparklers?
Unlike traditional sparklers that can burn someone on contact (ouch), cold sparklers use simulated pyrotechnic effects — thus the name. That means they’re so cold, you can put your hand directly in the sparks and feel nothing more than a cool breeze.
No accidental burns, no clouds of smelly smoke, and—best of all—they are safe to use indoors!
That means no more stressing about indoor venues, fire codes, or rain plans. Your couple can have their picture-perfect moment, no matter the setting. Plus, they don’t have to rely on people to line up in an organized manner — there’s nothing like an out-of-place guest to spoil a picture!
The great thing about cold sparkler fountains (in addition to everything already mentioned) is that they are manned and operated by someone onsite. Instead of handing out sparklers to all of the guests and going around to light them all, you just need one staff member with a remote. That’s all. They can control the height, the fullness, the effects, and the timing, providing a fully customized experience for the customer.
So, what’s the catch?
There are two main drawbacks: noise and cost. Since cold sparklers run on a motor, they will be louder than your average handheld sparkler. (But, they are on par with other pyrotechnic equipment.) There’s really no way to get around that, so make sure your clients are aware before booking. If they want a special song played at the same time, it may be wiser to stick with the traditional route.
And, of course, they are costlier than purchasing a few packs of sparklers from a retail store. To book a cold sparkler, a couple will need to work with a lighting company and rent the equipment well in advance of their wedding.
Cold sparkler fountains certainly have a lot to offer in the way of experience and will add an extra flair to any celebration. However, couples should be aware of the pros and cons in order to make an educated decision for their big day.
