Let’s face it. Running a business is difficult. Even in an industry based on love and celebration sometimes it’s hard to keep a positive attitude when things just aren’t going your way. Work can become overwhelming, clients and employees demand our attention, administrative tasks seem never-ending, and on top of all that we are expected to be the creative leaders of our business. So how do you stay optimistic? What do you do when negative situation rears its ugly head or you’re just too tired to deal with it all? We’ve all been there, so here are a few suggestions to get out of that funk and back to business.
Surround yourself with positive people. This will change your business and your life. Find people who are naturally positive. Energy is contagious. Friends, networking groups or fellow business owners who share a positive attitude will help keep your energy level up and allow you to view your life optimistically. One kind word can change your whole day. Imagine if you were surrounded by kind, uplifting words on the regular.
Cease the negative self talk. This is a hard one. It took me the better part of two years to stop sabotaging myself with a constant negative inner dialogue that entered every aspect of my life. You can counteract this with written or spoken affirmations, behavioral modifications or sheer will power. I employed a method that involved all three. It’s done wonders for my confidence and cleared my head for more productive endeavors.
Turn that frown upside down. What I’m talking about here is taking a negative situation and turning it into something positive that works for you. Did you learn a valuable lesson? Blog about it and share your experience with others so they may learn from your mistakes. Is there something you can do to turn the situation around? Ask an objective third party for solutions, remove your emotions from the equation and try to find a way to make things better. You may not see it now but there is always a positive aspect that can be harvested however small.
Shake it off. From Mariah Carey to Taylor Swift there are plenty of pop songs to inspire you with this one. Sometimes stepping away for a bit will give you perspective. Other times you just have to let it go for your emotional well being. Working on another project, taking some personal time or getting together with a trusted colleague can help.
No one’s life is positive all the time, but we can control how we react to those negative moments and begin to eliminate their influence.
